What are good pants to wear when backpacking/trekking?
I know that might be a strange question to some, but when you do enough walking, the inner thighs of your pants lose their fabric from the constant friction. To turn a page... |

For three-season hiking, I prefer lightweight, nylon, zip-off pants that can be converted into shorts.
Something like this would fit the bill. |

I second that, Skimaxpower. Something synthetic that dries quickly and cargo pockets are the best on the trail. when you start out on the trail on a cool morning, you've got pants, and when you heat up you've got shorts without having to stop and strip!

How about pants for sub-tropical, mosquito infested areas?
I am looking hard, but everything seems for 3 season. |

Third that. I've had all kinds, and am now looking for a second pair to do the camino de santiago with.
Forf the tropics, zip off as well, so you can have shorts when you want, but with insects, shorts are often a really bad idea. |

I could invest in some gaiters if you wish to stay away from any insect situation.
