I'll be travelling to Southeast asia and Japan in March. I need to bring my laptop due to work, and I'll stay in hostels most of the time. I did a search and found some similar questions but not many answers...I'm planning to lock my laptop in the hostels' lockers while I'm out sightseeings. Do you think that's it's ok? Also, will a small carry on luggage (22'') fit in a locker? Thanks for your replies!

Not all hostels have lockers, but all should at least have a secure place to leave the laptop, such as with Reception. A surprising number of hostels have free WiFi now.

I think its one of those out of site out of mind things.
However, if I were you I would get an appropriate sized pacsafe and lock it to the bed while keeping it in my backpack. It would need a bit of a long tie for this though. |

Thanks all for your replies! Do you know where I can buy the lock chain that I can lock my backpack to a bed? I don't want to use the pacsafe nest since it might be heavy to carry around anyway.
Also, how safe it is to leave your bag at the reception? I mean do they actually ask for ID when you come to get your bag? Thanks guys! |

Pacsafe doesn't weigh much. I have the 100 version and it amply fits my camera, passport, wallet, camera accessories and ipod. In fact, its almost too big. Despite the size and capacity it hardly weighs anything and folds almost completely flat taking up very little space.
This stuff is made with backpackers in mind, there is no way it would be too heavy. |

I just use a cable lock for my laptop. Works fine.

I use a bike lock I got at Target, I think it was $5. It is slightly heavier than I would like though.
