Does anyone out there (ahem, Joe) know if there exists a near leak-proof container for bar soap? Preferrably one that has a hinged lid? I realize that's a tall order.
My husband is crazy about his bar soap, but then crazy cause of the mess it makes in his overnight bag. Thanks |

You married this guy?
You see, the problem is that square or rectangular containers always have a problem sealing. Here is what I do: Being the thrifty (read: cheapskate) guy that I am, I reuse Altoids boxes as bar soap containers. They have crummy hinges, so I have to put a rubberband around them. And since they are not waterproof, I have to pat-dry the bar of soap on the guesthouse towel just before checkout. Not the ideal solution. Of course, there are Ziploc freezer bags, but if 'ol picky Mr. Menudio really wants no leaks onto his frillies, he should run down to Mountain Air Sports (on State Street) and buy some sort of squat Nalgene container to hold his bar soap in. Those don't leak. |

I simply don't believe you guys! This is madness! Why don't you get a liquid soap on a sealed container? I thought menudio's husband is the paranoia award winner, but joe's contraptions beat him straight out - no nonsense!

he has sensitive skin, he requires special-boy soap for his special-boy needs.
I think the only madness here is why hasn't a leak-proof bar soap container been invented yet! Human habitation in Greece dates back to 70,000 BC, yet you people can't make me a lil soap container. chop chop, get on it doggonit! |

In fact, since you mentioned it, I was reading somewhere tha soap is a really old thing. Soap, cosmetics and fabric colours are among the first applications of rudimentary chemistry that man has ventured into. They date back to ancient Egypt. (I'm going to Egypt for christmas, and I was reading up, refreshing my history knowledge) There was an article on NG recently about an ancient commercial shipwreck found somewhere near here, and amongst the various products found there were some 'luxury' goods including cosmetics. But these were only traces found in containers, because the morons hadn't thought of sealed, waterproof amphoras!!!

Puah. Funny thread!
I personally go for liquid soap packed in a plastic bag (if the container's a bit suspicious two bags). Then I put all the stuff that can leak (After Shave, creams and s*ç%) in the seperated top compartment of my backpack. 1. it does get less pressure up there and 2. if it leaks - not much get's spoiled (at some points you might actually be glad some soap leaks, so that your backpack doesn't gets smelly! Simplicity is the solution almost in all situations while travelling. And that's a good thing! Adrian www.aresthetics.ch/trav My personal travel website |

I travel with a bar of soap because its is actually easy to take care of. My special container is a 2 cent supermarket bag in which I plonk the soap ( no drying necessary ) and twist it closed.
Speaking on Mountain Air Sports in Santa Barbara I bought my Cats Meow sleeping bag there in 1991 together with a Ridge rest pad, toured the world with them both till my trip back to SB in 1996...and my pad was nicked on the train from Oregon!
