Holds PhD in Packing |
I was hoping to get underwater housing for my Canon SD400, which I've had for about 2+ years now, but it turns out Canon only offers an "all-weather" case (it can go to 10ft under) and not an underwater case for it. This is a little annoying because I was planning on taking some diving classes while I travel.
My question is, is it worth it to spend 100+ dollars on a case that can only go 10ft deep? It would still good for snorkeling and beach pictures, I guess... Does anyone have experience with the all-weather housing and whether it's possible to take them deeper than 10ft? On the Amazon.com reviews some people claimed to go down to the 30-60 feet with the case (although obviously this isn't optimal.) This is my backup camera for the trip, so if something happened it wouldn't be disastrous - just inconvenient. I was really hoping to use it for underwater pictures, beach pictures, and bar pictures... I'm a little bummed that it looks like it might be useless for 1 of those 3 activities. |

Your best bet is to rent a camera or get a disposable if you just want to use it for a trip. The cost of a waterproof housing and the pain of carrying it around is usually much more than renting.

Thanks! How much does it cost to rent? I'll be diving mostly in Central America, Galapagos, Australia, and Southeast Asia.

It really depends. If you know the dive shop you will be diving with, contact them before hand.
I'd say $10-$30 per day. I rented one in Palau and it used compact flash. I had a spare CF card for my normal camera and used that, so I got 2gb of storage rather than 64mb. Also, I was able to replace the card when I was done and process the files myself. This is a video I made with the rental point and shoot camera: http://youtube.com/watch?v=SxD5eRVtuHE |

I bought this for only $12. I don't plan on using it for diving though, I don't really care for swimming. I mostly got it for the rain and if I spend time on a boat. It seems to work pretty well, its just important to keep the lens flush with the plastic.

hi
I've got a Canon Ixus 7000 and their housings were only rated to 10m so i got one from a company called Ikelite (www.ikelite.com) couldnt be happier - the unit is rated to 60m and lets me access all the options on my camera - It came in at about the same price that Canon were charging for their own housing. hope this helps cheers Jeelan "Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -- WOW--What a Ride!" |
