Hi all,
I'm heading off shortly for two weeks in India ( a Delhi Varanasi loop) and then pretty much all over China in a month. I had planned on bringing two light cargo type roll-up-able pants and a knee length skirt, then shorts and a shorter skirt for China, a long with my normal fairly fitted but not like "bet on" t-shirts... and flip flops and a pair of light pumps and runners I'm just a bit concerned about whether these clothes will be appropriate in India particularly? I don't want to be disrespectful or attracting unnecessary attention either. I've read alot of contradictory stuff on this in other forums.. I'd certainly appreciate any feedback. |

Long pants, t-shirts should be fine in india. I would be careful wearing tank tops and shorts, short skirt in Delhi and Varanasi...actually i would not wear them at all other than at a beach.
You will see many travelers wearing tank tops but know that its nto the culture in India to wear these...i have seen some locals in Mumbai wearing. A little conservative clothing in India will be fine. But know that no matter what you wear you will still attract attention just for being a western traveler. Some of the attention will be unwanted. Even if you were wearing a potato sack they would notice you and hassel you. If you're leaving pretty soon, it will probably be very hot in India, so you might want to buy a cheap cotton salwar kameez once you get there. I completely agree with Madhu's thoughts relating to the clothing being fine custom-wise, but often, I find that even the lightest western clothes don't keep me cool enough there (I guess it's the type of fabric we use here). You should be able to pick up a cheap salwar kameez for 500 rupees (about $10) and up.
