Does anyone have opinions on whether the 3rd gen Ipod nano (with a video screen) or the 2nd gen Ipod nano (without) would be better suited for RTW travel? I'm leaning towards without, as watching TV shows and movies holds basically no appeal to me, and it seems like having it out where everyone can see is just asking for trouble (vs. keeping it discretely in your pocket to just listen to music.) On the other hand, I can imagine it being worth it for when you get really homesick and just want to watch some comfort TV/movie.

(Of course, I'm still annoyed that Apple is making it more and more so that you *need* to get the video Ipod.)

I have a big iPod video, which I fawned over at first...and then got an iPod Shuffle as a gift six months later. Much to my tech-loving surprise, the shuffle is preferred. I almost never use the video on the big iPod...TikiTV is just about it. (Oh, Lala...mix me a drink...)

Some day I'll have a nano, and I'll get one without video.

I have a first gen Nano. I've never owned a video iPod, so I can't say it's useless, but the Nano only holds like 4-8 gigs.

That's not enough to hold very much video at all. So, if yuo're travelling, you'll load it up with music anyway.

I would buy a 2nd gen Nano and save some money. Aside from video and shape (I like the old shape better anyway), everything else is the same.

The later model ipods have better batteries and more storage. Get the newest one you can afford.

The Ipod nano with video has a bigger battery but it also has a bigger, brighter screen - the "official" lifetimes of the battery are both 24 hours according to Apple.

For storage, 4gb and 8 gb models are offered for both the 2nd and 3rd gen.

I ended up buying the non-video Ipod nano. I paid nearly as much as I would for a 3rd gen model with video, but I really prefer the smaller size and shape of the 2nd gen Ipod, and prices were actually rising on it (I think because it's getting rarer in the marketplace.) Also, I just don't need a video ipod.

Now to decide on camera/laptop.

When you're investigating these purchases, make sure that the power adapter for your electronics says (small print) 110-220V. That means that it will work work in foreign countries without a big, heavy, expensive voltage adapter. You'll still need a plug adaptor, but these are small and cheap.

I have the video Ipod and the videos drain the battery badly. So I rarely look at videos unless I have access to an outlet.

I had a video Ipod when I was traveling in the Middle East and I loved it. I also had the cords that allow it to connect to a tv. I just got such a kick out of watching Nip Tuck on the bus from Amman to Wadi Musa!
