Armchair Traveler |
I'm looking at an Osprey Ariel for travel. I like the padding on the straps, the added features and it's comfortable. But I am concerned about flying with it. Has anyone had any trouble with the assorted straps getting caught/torn when checked in? Do you tape them down? Put the bag in a bag (which makes me think of the late-great Mr. Carlin)?
It seems that a travel pack (like the Osprey Porter) has fewer straps and might be better for hostelling and less strenuous travel but I don't like the lack of padding on the straps--not comfortable--and can't imagine walking around for any length of time with it. So it's not much of an option for me. Are there any options I am simply missing? Sharron The only difference between a rut and a grave is their dimensions. Ellen Glasgow travel blog and more! |

When I fly, I put my pack in an Osprey Airporter: it's basically just a zippered, lockable nylon sack. It weighs next to nothing and is also useful as an extra (albeit slash-able) layer of anti-theft protection for those times when you leave your back behind in a hotel room. REI sells them for about $25.

Thanks for the suggestion. I bought my Ariel today and the bag to put it in. Yay! Sharron The only difference between a rut and a grave is their dimensions. Ellen Glasgow travel blog and more! |

I think I've pitched this idea here on BnA before.
Besides the extra security it supplies when checking in one's pack, said cheap REI duffel also allows you to 1.) hide your backpacker status (allowing you to occasionally look less like a hunchback, which can be beneficial at times) and 2.) have an extra bag for bringing back all the extra goods accumulated while traveling. I do it all the time. ______________________________________________________________________________ "The gentle reader will never, never know what a consummate ass he can become until he goes abroad. I speak now, of course, in the supposition that the gentle reader has not been abroad, and therefore is not already a consummate ass. Why buy an Osprey airporter when you could just pick up a cheap but similar bag in any shop?

I'm going out on a limb as we haven't received ours yet, but this is what we'll be using. Pro-Tector Rucksack Protector
They're simple, light weight, durable and it'll make you feel good to support them too. I'll update my post when we get a chance to try them out. Good luck! Jeremy |
