I was just wondering, if when you travel, your #1 (most sturdy, most used) pair of shoes are brown, black, some other color, or multi-colored?
seems like a small thing, I know, but I obviously cant get the indigo pants if I'm rocking the mustard-yellow shoes all the time... brown I like but it seems less urban (depending on the style), black is kind of boring, but seems most versatile... curious to what others have gone with...
If there was a flashpacking forum, this Q might go there hehe I'm not really asking about high-performance gear, just an issue of practical style... thanks!
I'm planning on bringing regular sneakers and flip flops for Thailand. That's it - as I'll be on islands mostly. If I was going more urban, I'd bring sneakers plus black shoes and/or black sandals. You can't have too many shoes!! (Will they kick me off this board for saying that?)

to the ppl who say brown, I hear you, but whatchu got against black? Doesnt it work better for nights on the town? (of which I expect to have a few...)
I love green shoes for some odd reason, but I have to restrain myself from going there, cuz I got green pants and a green jacket too lol... ah heck it, maybe I'll just go as Snufkin hehehe those boots'd make a hardcore BnA'er proud, right?
A SHOE THREAD! I MUST JOIN! Black or brown, black or brown. I think it totally depends on what else you are packing (and that all depends on where you are going). I have yet to decide whether to go with black or brown myself. Maybe if you decide what color belt you are going to bring...then just choose the same for your shoes.
Where are you going, Mina?

Thanks for your comments! glad I am not the only one who expends mental energy on this crucial, crucial issue lol...
I'm going to Northern Europe Amy, mostly Scandinavia and the Baltics, but flying in and out of either Amsterdam or Frankfurt.
Good suggestion on the belt! Lemme think about that one~
Libby, funny! doesnt look like Viggo to me *drool* but Tolkien did borrow from Finnish lore, and I'd bet the Moomins did too, never thought about Snufkin that way tho heheheh
i usually go for the 'urban' look.. which makes me really picky about my shoes. the first time i went to europe, i ended up feeling like such an underdressed slob. the second time, i brought more 'urban-ish' shoes (you know, the ones that diesel and sometimes puma makes) and black stiletto pumps. i know i shouldn't care how i'd look but hey, i can't help it! although.. i was able to bring extra pairs of shoes only because the trip itself wasn't that long - if it were any longer than two weeks i would have left the pumps at home.

My Birks are brown... I think I'm going to get a pair of "funky-ish" sneakers, in a blue or red.
I'm still trying to decide what to do about a third pair. I'm actually thinking I may go for four... A pair of black shoes I can toss and some heels to top it off.

ah, xoom, she of stylish purses! please do not feel compelled to explain yourself here, everybody knows the wrong shoes or boots can seriously eff you up on the road, whether we're talking performance or looking good, its all relevant!
So uh, about those urban looks you prefer... we're talking multi-colors? sneaker style? got links? I've already talked myself out of this shoe but I still like it, reminds me of Diesel.
Stilletos eh? damn... talk about double-duty; are they a shoe? or are they a weapon! hehehe
Truth be told, I'm considering some heels too b/c I have to go to a wedding, but the pair I have in mind are kinda old so I think they will break or get tossed after that, tho they are very comfy... I dunno... depends on if I find the perfect sandal or not, I guess.

you're going to Korea meagicano? Based on what Korean women wear here, I would think having at least one pair of heels is required!
black reefs and a sweet pair of greenish brown Adidas

And I also tote around a stinky pair of old Tevas as well.
Gotcha, thx... You are more hard core than I, I'm sure. I suspected it, but those photos of you climbing confirmed it! very inspiring!

Mina, where in Scandanavia are you going?
Norway, Sweden and Finland... The itinerary is not fully set, but it looks like we're doing a Scandinavian capitals type tour (minus Denmark(?)), with side trips including Fjords and Estonia... its a family trip, but I should have 7-14 days to ramble like I want to, w/no strict itinerary.
I must say that the "athletic inspired" shoes are a great mix of style and comfort. And if you aren't planning on hiking/trekking a lot, then they should work fine as opposed to more of a hiking shoe. The tough part comes in when you are planning on doing a little bit of everything.
I just KNOW I am going to end up with four pairs of shoes in my pack. (and of course I will end up living in just one of them)
