Hey all,

I leave for Guatemala in 2 weeks and don't know what to bring for footwear. At home I live in sandals, pumas, and campers, all really comfortable, but I don't know what will translate best to traveling for a few weeks around Guatemala and maybe some other places.

If you could only bring one pair of shoes, what would it be?

thanks!
Kelli

I would bring either:

Salomon Elios (Goretex XCR)

or

Keen Targhee Mid (e Vent Waterproofing)

They are both durable enough to hike in, yet nimble enough to navigate a farmers market or bar without stepping on toes. And waterproof.

i hiked in the keen targhees- great comfy shoe from the get-go. but they lost their water-proofness about a month into the hike. should be good if your not too terribly rough with them.

i plan to bring my chacos. good all-around shoe for anything but extreme winter weather.

Ok, I'll revise this by asking:

If you are traveling right now, what are you wearing on your feet?

For my trip last month to Peru I wore a pair of Men's Radius (Wide Width), but only because the Men's Moab Ventilator Wide Width was/is out of stock in my size. The Radius have worked out fine, I am wearing them to Colombia next week. I think that Skimax has better suggestions.

These:

Nike Free 5.0 -- but in dark blue, not black. Smile

I'm looking into the Nike Free Trail shoes, very similar, just a bit more sturdy sole, better if doing a lot of off-road hiking.

I travelled for a month in belize and mexico with only a pair of crocs and a pair of flip flops. I could have gotten by just fine with only the crocs. I don't do a lot of hiking though, I spend most of my time near the beach. If you were hiking then I don't think the crocs could be your only shoe

how hot is it going to be when you get there?
If it is going to be warm, I'd get some athletic sandals (in the style of Tevas, but with better quality, comfort, cushioning). I have a pair of Nike athletic sandals and they are equally great for hiking AND spending the day on the beach and IN the water.

The only qualm I have with those hiking shoes above (even the fully covered runners) is that in hot weather you'd feel way to hot and sweaty!

I run wherever I go so I make sure to bring running shoes as one of my pairs of shoes.

But I don't think you're running...so I would recommend a comfy pair of shoes (not sneakers) that are good for hiking if you are doing that, or are good for chilling in the city.

Flip flops are essential for skanky hostel showers and beaches. So you should bring two at least; and flip flops don't take up much room!
