Holds PhD in Packing

Bearing in mind the fact that we will be in Asia when it's HOT and Mongolia when it's COLD, what can we ditch?

2 cotton skirts
3 short sleeved shirts
1 swimsuit
1 sunhat
1 sandals

2 cotton trousers (too cold?)
1 thermal longjohns
2 long sleeved shirts
2 thermal undershirts
1 fleece vest
1 woollen sweater
1 fleece jacket
1 rain poncho
1 woollen hat
1 neck gaiter
1 mittens
3 socks
1 boots

4 undies
2 bras

I'm terrified of freezing, but you're still going to tell me not to take the sweater, one of the thermal shirts and the neck gaiter, aren't you?!

All loaded up, my pack weighs 17kg, but I'm carrying gear for two of the kids as well, so I can't see myself getting it to a comfortable 10kg.
We are considering posting our winter gear ahead (probably to the ranch where we'll be in Mongolia)- anyone done this? It would make our first six months much more comfortable, but we're scared we would end up in minus twenty celsius wearing a sunhat and sandals.

I would simply buy winter gear there. It's gotta be less expensive than posting yours.

Seems a pity to buy more when we already have stuff here, KWIM?

But what if you bought some there and then donated it to someone who needed it when you were done? Economically, environmentally and karmically a good choice all around! Smile

That's what I did - bought a sleeping bag there and then donated it to an orphanage (along with some other stuff I didn't want to carry anymore) before leaving.

There's a big shopping center on the main boulevard in UB, plus souvenir shops sell traditional coats etc., and the black market has a lot of clothes too. So you'll certainly be able to get everything you need in Mongolia.
