it's fine, as long as you don't get lulled into a false sense of security by the island lifestyle. big corn has police.

I spent a week on the Corn Islands at the beginning of the month. I had absolutely no sense of danger at all on Little Corn-everyone we met was super friendly- no evidence of criminal activity(though we were not on the north side of the island). We asked a few of the locals and other tourists who had been there a while whether there were places we should stay away from and no one had any warnings.
I did not have the same feeling on Big Corn but we weren't there very long. The local people did not seem quite as
friendly and maybe because it was larger and more spread out it did not have the same feel. I also noticed that the cab drivers doubled their fares at night.

oh, speaking of taxis! they drive in a loop around the island so don't be surprised when they stop to pick other people up. everyone still pays the same amount. if you're not comfortable with that, you can rent your own golf cart.. i think it's like $100 for a couple days. you should still rent one for a couple of hrs.. they're so fun!!!
