For a better understanding of the history of unrest and genocide, you could read "Paradise in Ashes". Might be better after your trip, though - I found it hard to sleep well if I read it right before bed.

Have a great trip!

1. Useful phrases in Spanish.

2. Footprints guide to CA and SA

3. Under the Volcano... about lago atitlan

4. The novels presented as facts by the guatemalan writer.
Bad things DID happen to the indians in guatemala, by the way. Just ask the thousands of refugees now living in chiapas because their lands were taken from them. Apparently the government only recognises registered land titles, and many indian villages occupied the same place so long they were never issued. Others were land owned by the husbands of women, and when the men were disappeared, well, title never reverted to the wife or family.

5. Sudoku in English

6. One book, preferably bad or in German or swedish, that you can trade in at a hostel for a good book. Add to the collection of German and non-english titles. Everyone will love you. VBG

Saw a phrase book with this phrase.

"Do you have a pink parasol?"

I couldn't buy it from the lucky man who owned it.
