Can anyone recommend (or warn about) any surf camps for beginner surfers but seasoned travelers in Nicaragua? A friend and I are looking for a place that's well-run, responsible, but not too expensive.
Thanks! Scott |

You could try Bahia Majagual, just north of San Juan del Sur. It's very much a party place, although the area is really mellow. It's about a 15 minute walk from Maderas, which is a decent break, although it might be daunting for beginners. I've been surfing ten years, although I'm barely beyond beginner level still, and Maderas could be frightening on good days. There's a consistent offshore wind, the waves tend to be really pretty, although often crowded. I've heard of a camp at Playa Yankee, which I think is south of SJdS.
Most of the well-known breaks in Nicaragua (well-known in the Nica context means fierce) have surf camps. If you're still iffy about surfing, they can be a handful. Currents tend to be brutal, and you shouldn't be too cocky with the strength of the breaks. A lot of people drown every year at places like Poneloya. |

Thanks. Sounds like some caution is warranted.
