Hello everyone,

A friend and I are planning to do a bit of a circle through the Yucatan Peninsula down into Guatemala (including Tikal, Antigua, and Chichicastenango). After some thought, we'd like to get around the bus system, and rent a car in Merida for the length of our journey. I've done some research on my own, and I've already figured out which car companies WON'T let you cross borders, but does anyone have experience with a car company that will?

Also, regarding insurance, has anyone ever had experience with a provider who would give them coverage for crossing borders? I am looking at the plan through Access America that you can purchase on Orbitz, but I'd love some personal feedback on this.

When crossing out of Mexico into Guatemala, is there any specific town/border crossing you have to go through?

Thanks everyone.

-Anne

Going direct from Mexico to Guatemala involves going down the west coast, from what I understand. I don't believe there is a direct crossing from the north of Guat. I think it's all Bosque, though maybe I am wrong. I think, if you are thinking of that, you have to go through Belize.

There is another recent thread dealing with rental cars, maybe it covers your question.

Hello and welcome.

You can cross from Chiapas to northern Guatemala, although probably not with a car. There are irregular boats crossing the Usumacinta River from Frontera Corozal (Mexico) to Bethel (Peten, Guatemala). There's also a crossing further south, from Ciudad Cuauhtemoc to La Mesilla, and then the Pan-American crossing near the coast at Tapachula.

you have to talk with thg guy in the office and inform you direct on place. but you really have to be carefull, they may say yes of course you are covered in an other country but you are not. i asked around for my self when i was in mexico and that s what people told me. don t let you fuck and never drive during the night. ask local pople with a car if it s safe or not! to cross the border i would recommend the big companies, i saw a few big internationeal companies in merida. i would focus on those.
maybe it helps you
