Hello, I'm trying to figure out if July to Aug is a good time to travel to Central America - namely Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Costa Rica.

I've read that it's the rainy season (and hurricane season)...but how bad does it really get? Has anyone travelled during this time of year? If so, what was your experience, would you recommend it?

My concern is mostly flooding and the roads/infrastructure. I went to Belize in Dec, and talking to a guy who had been there for a few weeks, found that not too many roads are paved there...

I haven't traveled there, but a friend of mine was in Guatemala in July and he said the rainy was extremely bad. I guess much of it depends upon where you are from. In oregon, I am used to it. But if you're from Texas, then it might be a bit of nuisance

I have been there in July and the rain does begin, but it ain't everyday and it doesn't last all day. When it does come, though, it can be torrential.

If you are going off the beaten track, it could be tough with some washed out roads. The upside is that there will not be a ton of other travellers on the road, and you can always figure out how to get where you are going.

If you are going down there for non stop sun, July August may not be the time. But if you are going down for some other experience, you could do worse.

Good luck

D

Okay...Where next...?

I've spent the last three winters in Central America, and I live in Guatemala at the moment, but I haven't been here in July or August. The last post is quite accurate, from what I'e heard. I visited Costa Rica during the rainy season, and was not that impressed. Hiking in the rain was not bad, but it's far too developed for my taste.

If you do come down here, you'll find many travel tips at my site at http://guatemalanspanishschools.com and several stories about Guatemala at http:geocities.com/chicken_bus

UBBCode? What the heck is a UBBCode?
