We will be making it to Costa Rica sometime in Novemeber and would like to rent a place. We will need a place big enough for my husband and I, our two kids, plus an extra room for visitors we will be having during the time we stay there. We'd like to stay on the Pacific Coast.

Do you of you have suggestions on how to go about this or any good contacts for people renting places? We were thinking somewhere around the $500-$600 range.

Thanks!

Some places to start . .

The Tico Times - http://www.ticotimes.net
AMCostaRica - http://www.amcostarica.com
Graig'sList - http://costarica.craigslist.org/

you might also do a search for realtors on the Pacific coast and contact a few of those. They quite often know of short-term rentals. Just be careful that your landlord understands fully and completly, in writing, the term of your tenancy. The law is different down here.

There are plenty of realtors on both coasts that speacialize in getting places for americans or foreigners in general. It's a bit more expensive than trying to negotiate the thing yourself, but trying to negotiate it yourself is often quite a headache. Just be sure to confirm all the basics before getting in. Be clear about your departure dates.

TGIF Hola, as a resident in Costa Rica for over a year rentals run from crap shacks to million dollar mansions. Try Floribeth @ surfside properties http://surfsidepropertiescostarica.com/ She has lots of rentals within walking distance to the beach in Playa Potrero/Playa Flamingo area. We love it here and the beachs and fishing are great. And we are only 20 minutes from Tamarindo and the surf spots. For high end places in the Gold Coast Area, try Britta @ Gold Coast Property rental @ http://www.zurqui.co.cr/crinfocus/oro-sea/sea.html. We rented a house from Floribeth for the first 6 months we lived here. It was a brand new 2 bedroom with a pool for $900.00 per month.

I thought I'd post an update on what we ended up doing in case anyone else could use the information. We ended up renting an apartment in Alajuela, which is near the San Jose apartment (closer to the airport than San Jose is actually).

http://www.villascolibri.com/

This is a complex that has beautiful gardens, swimming pool and tennis court. Most of the people who stay there are tourists. They have weekly, monthly and yearly rates.

It would be a nice place to stay for just a night or an extended period of time, like we did. We stayed for a month in a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom fully furnished apartment for $850/month.

i lived in costa rica a couple years ago and honestly i think your best bet is to not commit yourself to anything before you get down there. you can always find listings online as well as in newspapers but you never really know what you're getting. it's real easy once you get to the place you want to stay to find out what's available. my advice...find a hotel/hostel for the first few days and spend that time shopping around for your best options. there's too many factors at play (what's the running water like, proximity to the beach, cleanliness of the house, noise level in the area, etc.) to not want to see things for yourself first. but that's just me.

suerte,
