Has anyone experience of staying longer that the 90 day limit?
My flight is on my 91st day so i am only one day over. Ive only three weeks left and i dont really want to waste a weekend and the expense going to the border or Guatemala city. Will they stop me leaving the country and make me got to the Visa office and miss my plane? Seems unlikely. Will they just fine me a few Qs, probably be chaper than going to the border. I have spent two weeks in Hondorus but i think this is included in the visa. Any ideas? Thanks Mike |

There will probably be a Multa. Ask people who live there what the current policy is, but the Guatemalans are in love with issuing Multas(fines)
The Multa depends on how generous the officials feel, honest they are, and how much of a hurry you appear to be in. For problems with a car visa, which they said wasn't in order, there was a multa for over 100 dollars USA. The best sources for this would be an expat travel community say, in Antiqua, say, Juan3's weekly expat meeting group. I DON'T recommend going to Guat city to sort it out unless you have to. Its a mess dealing with them there. It takes usually two days at least. So, heres a suggestin. Lacking information from a tourist that has done this on this board recently(and it is a good idea), pop over to Antiqua and investigate. Or, change your flight for the 90th day starting on th day of issue, and you have no problems. To leave the area means you have to go quite a ways south or North to Mexico on a one day bus to Chiapas. I'm told, here, that there is now a common border zoner with a common time limit. Yes, it IS 6 of one, half dozen of the other!!! Maybe there are flights to panama or something!!! |

I haven't experienced this myself but I read a while back that if someone notices, the multa is only a couple of dollars. At the airport, chances are no one will even look at that stamp. If an official does notice, plead innocence, say please and smile sheepishly. I don't think you have a real problem. Good luck.

OK, thanks for the replies, think i will risk it. Hopefully the fine will be less than than it would cost to go to the border or Guate City, and i will be able to do something more interesting with my time.

The last I heard, the fine for overstaying your visa was Q10 per day. That's about $1.30-$1.40. Most people I have talked with haven't even been asked for the fine, but you never know who you will encounter the day you leave. So, I would advise being at La Aurora the requested 2 hours before your flight time to allow for any extra time that might be required to pay the fine and have the paperwork completed.
Please come back on this forum after your trip, and tell us about your experiences. ----------------------------------------- I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.-Mark Twain |

i´d say they are incredibly relaxed about the 90 day thing. i´m in guatemala currently and my passport was not even stamped upon entry. same thing in el salvador.

The multa (fine) is Q10 per day. Generally, at the airport, no one checks too closely.
In 15 years, I know of only one gringo who missed his flight because of being overdue. He was WAY overdue, a few months, and had a bad attitude as well. Be pleasant and apologetic, if necessary. life is a trip |
