I'm also from San Francisco, and I took a two week road trip/surfing trip in Mexico in November 2002. We stopped in 3 little surfing towns along the mid-Pacific coast. The one that I remember as being the best was a little tiny town called Nexpa. When I went, we had a car, so I'm not sure how hard it would be to get to without a car, but judging from the looks of things, difficult. Anyway, there's not much to the town itself, but the part of the town that is on the coast is awesome. There is nothing there besides little bungalows and cabins that you can rent. Just about the only reason to go to Nexpa is to surf. There's nothing else there. I stayed for $15 a night in a neat little hotel run by a American/Mexican married couple. There are cheaper places as well, but the place was comforable, and $15 bucks seemed like a steal. The rooms each have a bathroom. I'm not sure where you go to the bathroom in the cheaper places. Anyway, the place was great! Since there's nowhere else to go, every night all of the visitors would meet at the restaraunt part of the hotel, which consists of a thatched roof covering a cement patio right on the beach. No walls or anything like that. Just a roof, some hammocks and lots of strangers sitting around talking and having a good time. The surfing was good. I've heard that there are better spots for surfing along the Pacific Coast, but it was pretty good, and the town itself was definitely worth it.
