I recently returned from Costa Rica and my new Washington Mutual card (which switched from plus to star) wouldn't work at any ATM's in the country. Before traveling to Costa Rica make sure that your Debit card has either a plus or cyrus symbol on the back of it. Star did work in Panama and Nicaragua.

Good advice Vaden!

Note also that Plus cards or Cirrus cards will only work in some of the ATM's. That is - some ATM's will accept Plus and some will accept Cirrus. I haven't seen any that will accept both. So don't be discouraged if one ATM will not accept your card. Just try a different bank!

Also, regarding money here, most stores will accept US dollars and they know to the penny or colon what the exchange rate is for the day. They will shave you for a few, but generally they are fair about it. You are always better off using the local currency.

And don't even think about traveler's cheques.
