Hello - this is the first time I post but log on often to check out what people are doing. this is my second time going to Guatemala with my 4 kids. two years ago the advice I got here was very helpful when doing Tikal. This trip I have the following questions, I hope someone can give me some advice:

1. we are hoping to stay in Rio Dulce, Banana Palms resort. Has anyone stayed here before? How would you rate it? I am traveling with my father-inlaw this time and i am a bit nervouse. the resort website does not give a lot of info.
2.How far is this resort from the beach? specifically Dennys beach?
3. What is the best way to get to Dennys Beach?
4. is five days too long to stay here with a mix of teen agers and young kids (7yrs old)?

Gracias

HI
On 1 not sure I know that place, sounds new or renamed.
Dennys beach is about 45 minutes across the lake, nice place, be sure to go or come back in the AM, the water gets a bit rough after lunch, then again it may be fun. Beautiful sunsets there.
This trip will surprise your kids if it's there first trip out of USA. It's a great area to visit since it will be hot. Laying around reading, swimming and exploring will be fun? There are travel agents in Fronteras that speak english and can provide some ideas. A day trip to Livingston is nice, very pretty. Brunos Marina may still have a free shuttle to Dennys Beach, not sure.

I've heard nice things about Mansion del Rio as a place to stay.

Have Fun.

Thank you BassPlayer, Would you know how much time it takes to get to Rio Dulce by car from Guatemala City?

If you plan to drive from Guate to Rio Dulce and also go to Denny's Beach, you could turn off the Atlantico highway near Los Amates to Mariscos, on the Izabal lakeshore. Denny's has a safe parking lot at the dock and one of their boats will pick you up. Make a reservation and then call them as you reach Mariscos. Denny's has all kinds of activities and tours such as to Finca Paraiso, the hot waterfalls across the lake.
We happened there by chance and loved the place.

Oops! Rio Dulce is about five hours from Guate, Mariscos about 3 and a half. The road is much improved with 4 and 5 lanes divided near the City and new truck lanes up and down many of the long hills. It is still a very busy road and you need a heavy foot and all your attention for passing.
