I was wondering if anyone has gone from Cancun to Belize overland? I found it is very cheap to buy a ticket to Cancun rather than going to Belize City. The price difference is about $200 US and but I don't know if this is something that can be organized easily or if the savings would would be wasted on headache and time. If anyone has some insight let me know.

Thanks!

Hi Teague,
Welcome to BootsnAll. Cancun to Belize by bus is easy. You'll take a bus from Cancun to Chetumal, probably 5-6 hours, then you're essentially knocking on the door. You may need to switch bus companies in Chetumal. Bus service in Mexico is outstanding. In Belize....haven't been there in ten years, so maybe it's improved. Regardless, you'll get there.

Here's an old thread that will reassure you.

The bus system is terrific in Belize, and once you cross the border to Belize, it will be like the laid back atmosphere of Mexico was Stalinist Russia. No sweat. No worry.

I suggest, having done this exact thing earlier this year, that you get as far away from Cancun as you can the second you get off the plane and head south. There will be vans that will take you down to Playa del Carmen the second you get off the plane. I am guessing, if you are going cheap, you will fly at night. Playa will be a way better option for finding cheap accomodation. Then, in the morning, take the bus to Chetumal, and another to Corozal, and you are on your way....

Where to after that? I can help you from there, too.

Just confirming as both previous posts stated... It is "very" easy to make this trip from Cancun and as suggested, try to LEAVE Cancun asap! There is much more to offer in the surrounding areas which will be of more enjoyment than the tourist trap of Cancun. My buddy did the trip not long ago and he did in fact have to change buses in Chetmual, but ticket all ran on the same purchase and the connecting bus was waiting on the Belize side of the border when they got there. GL and let us know how the trip goes!

Even better, on the mexico side, Corozal buses are yelling for you as you have to walk across from the old bus, unless you are on the Corozal bus. Extra dollar. That's what I paid.

Cancun isnt that bad..It's one of those places that you can spend a day in a have enough of, but wouldnt you rather say that you'd been there?? Instead of running away from Cancun, book a night in a hostel and let yourself acclimatize to the weather, language, food and currency....go to a beach, take the local bus and breathe for a day....

leave Cancun @ about 10pm and you get to Playa del Carmen...then to Chetumal where it's SUPER easy to get a bus right through to Belize city...it's cheap and the buses are so much nicer than the ones that you find in Canada or the USA.

Have an excellent trip...and if I can suggest heading to Guatemala from Belize...it's a beautiful country and worth the trip!!

this is your life; are you who you want to be? go where you want to go...small trips for now...but look out...www.wherescass.blogspot.com
