I am leaving for Nicaragua on June 5th and will be traveling with someone who is nervous about the surprises that can come from trying to get around Latin American countries. So I was a little worried when I heard about the strike (I also have yet to tell him). I'm wondering if anyone has any information or advise on this issue.

Strikes are usually one day or half day. I think you should be flexible and have some leeway with your schedules, and don't expect German Train punctuality... These kind of surprise make great stories later... (and even in Germany there were train strikes this year!)

Thank you for the input but I think I should have been more specific with my inquiry.
This strike has been going on for 6 days and is over the rising cost of fuel.
When I travel alone these things don't really bother me but my boyfriend is not the alternative source of transportation type of guy. So I am wondering if there are ways of getting from location to location. We have already secured another way from Managua to Granada (at least I hope we have) and I am not too worried about getting to Ometepe (or maybe I should be?????), but we had planned on busing everywhere and have heard that not only are the buses not running but also there are roadblocks set up.
Once again....info please!
Thanks

Checking out the "Go To Nicaragua" and the "Real Nicaragua" websites indicate that private transportation, ie. shutles etc. are available but that you may be paying more for transportation and there have ben someroad blocks, primarily in Managua and on Big Corn. You might want to contact one of the tour agencies and get their read on the overall situation.

Oh, I wasn't aware that the strike was going for so long, Alana... I was making proyections about the duration of the strike from what has happened in Guatemala and El Salvador, which are the countries where I pass the most time... I will be more careful about extrapolating to other countries in CA, specially about Nicaragua, which currently has its own set of conditions. It also goes to show that there are a lot of differences between Latin American countries, and even between Central American countries, which is such a small area...
