One of the trips we have planned is traveling from ElPaso, Texas to Panama City, Panama then flying home, but we don't plan to do it in one car. Instead we'll hitchhike, ride buses, rent cars, etc. until we get there. The amount of time it takes doesn't matter. We've done this all over the NW part of South America and it's a lot of fun and you learn a lot more than taking they normal routes. We're doing the trip for a film segment but the dates have not been nailed down yet.

been in C.R. 6x. met a fellow who did what u r going to do and his story was not pleasant. from roadblocks(3) in mex and a succession thereafter in Guatemala, honduras, nicaragua etc. many payoffs or no progress. he sat at one spot for 5 days because he had no mas denero! he finally made it but : broke, in debt, hardly any possessions. He lost on the whole deal! take the bus! or fly!

I read a funny interesting book about traveling by car from NY to Rio ... actually in a hearse
The Burial Brothers: From New York to Rio in a '73 Cadillac Hearse It was published in 1998, so not that old. Cute story, decently written, although I would have liked a lot more detail of his travels. Anyway, an interesting story overall. I would send you mine but have passed it on a while ago. Enjoy. I am a Tour Operator and Resident of Guatemala and El Salvador since 1986, I drove my own Vehicle down through Mexico in 1987 and Registered Tax Free in Guatemala when I got my residency in 1988, as well in the late 80s and early 90s several of us imported vehicles and merchandise driving through Mexico, and now everyone ships their Cars by Container, or by Bonded Piggy Back lorries through Mexico, which now requires a bond. plus through C.A. you are asking for nothing but trouble, as when you drive through Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador and Nica. you will have NO insurance! Take the "Tica Bus" from Mexico City or Guatemala City through to C.R. stop off in any or every country enroute care free and cheap. If you have an accident with any personal injury you wind up in Jail till you pay. Donald T. Lee "Lets Go Amigo!"
