I will be spending 9 months backpacking through South America and instead of flying back to the US, I have decided to travel from Columbia to Panama and work my way back up through Central America. Are there any suggestions as to a necessary sites, a suggested itinerary and route that will take 6-8 weeks?

A good place to start would be to look at the schedule for Tica Bus. They travel to all of the capitols of all of the Central American countries from Panama to the Border of Mexico. One can buy a ticket for the entire trip, but stop in any country for as long as you like.

You know the trip between Colombia and Panamá requires a flight or a boat, right?

Thanks for the info. I heard about the Darien Gap. Beside the capitals what are the most recommended places that are off the beaten path to see?
