Two choices-

bus to Puerto Cortes and Gulf Cruza to Placencia and bus to BC

bus to Puerto barrios, Guatemala- boat to Punta Gorda and bus to Belize City

I suppose you could also bus to Rio Dulce and take the bus up to El Remate and across to BC but that would definitely be the long way.

Second what a601 posted, except that I think Gulf Cruza goes to Dangriga (or at least used to). Be careful in San Pedro Sula - it's one of the nastiest cities in Central America.

If you have time (not sure if you do, based on postings here), you could also head up to Roatan, and check with the yachties there. It wouldn't be hard to arrange passage to Belize with one of them.

Your boat ride will take about 1-2 hours.
Your bus ride will take at least 6 hours.

You also could boat to Caye Caulker (30-45 minutes) for a day and then go onward.

I took the bus from from Chetumal and it took me 8 hours (It was a long 8 hours). It's cheap, but the novelty wears off quickly.
