We are thinking about riding motorcycles down from the U.S. to Peru, and further south if possible and wondering about, given the current situations there, would it be too risky now? Anybody has done something like this before with tips to provide? Possible border problems? Thanks a lot!

I haven´t done it, but my impression is that if you're reasonably handy with the bike and have the time and money, overlanding from the US to Panama is doable (and relatively common.) Speaking Spanish fluently helps a lot. You shouldn't have huge issues at most of the borders.
From Panama to Columbia is a bit trickier - the best way is to get a ferry to Columbia and avoid the Darien Gap. I have no experience with this, but there's plenty of information on the internet... |

Google advrider. There are many posts by North to South riders and accounts of riding and boating around the Darien Gap.

Also try horizonsunlimited.com. Lots of information on visa crossings and outfitting the bike. I'm planning on doing the same thing, but not leaving for a couple more years. Enjoy!
