Hey xoom,
Nothing like a little Seattle/December weather to get you thinking about tropical islands, is there? Mad Don't know about guide books, but Boots member MeganL had several Corn Island entries on her excellent blog with lots of info. Her blog can be found here. Click on the link under her photo and scroll down to the mid-Feb entries. Also, there's a link to her boyfriend Michael's blog which has lots of drool-worthy photos.

Found a few threads for you- maybe something of interest to you is in here.
Here's a good one

And look I found another thread started by a really cool chick from Seattle!

Though I realize not specifically about guidebooks.

Good luck with the guide book search.

(There are actually little water waves in the toilets at my house right now. It's so windy here, I guess the house is swaying a bit, hence the "waves". I'm trying to pretend they're lapping up on a sunny beach somewhere. Roll Eyes)

Wow, Travis. You know, I'm sure a flight down to Southern California wouldn't be too expensive for you right now, you really don't have to fantasize about swimming in your toilet to get yourself through the winter! Haha. Smile

The major guidebooks have historically had outdated info on the islands although I have not yet seen the new Moon Guide.

I created a website with all of the info you'll need to research the area. Maybe you could print it out.

www.bigcornisland.com

Hope that helps!

I just left Big Corn yesterday and am now back in Queens...

Here are a few things the Moon Guide was a little inaccurate or unclear about:

There are a lot more places to stay than in the Moon Guide, there is an Internet cafe (about 100m south of Nautilus), and there were a lot more flights than we'd expected, including regular ones direct from MGA. The taxi rates are 15 Cordoba per person (20 after 10PM) and expect the driver to stop and let other people on until the car is full. If you have any specific questions, just ask.

The folks at Nautilus Dive Shop actually have a book with info they've complied, including a nice map. Its on the counter behind the table...Maybe you can write them and see if they could send it to you, or if they have any plans to publish it. I'm too lazy to get you the link, but it's dive nautilus I think. By the way, that is the ONLY place to get a real cup of coffee....Keep in mind, the reason you'll have trouble finding a book, is that this is as remote as it gets, small population that is mainly against foreign investment and has a minor fear of tourism...

I've almost always used Lonely Planet, although the quality of their guides has been markedly decreasing in the past several years. Moon does a specialized guide to Nicaragua that I thought was excellent.

The extra flights mentioned above are only during Christmas/New Year and Semana Santa/Easter.
