I stayed in the Melbourne Connection Travellers Hostel in February 2006 and it was clean and quiet, with very friendly people running it. Don't know about comfortable though-- it was 37 degrees out and with no a/c it was miserable. Also stayed in Hotel Bakpak which was like a 24 hour frat party, fun at the time but doesn't seem to be what you're looking for.

I have NOT stayed here, but I did look it up as i remember it was there...the location seems pretty darn good check it out
Melbourne International Backpackers India, UAE, Africa next, follow me! I'm 24, why isn't 100 countries and 7 continents realistic in a lifetime...33 and 4 down...39 or 40 and 5 by end of year |

Don't know if this is quite what you're looking for, but I stayed at Base Backpackers in St. Kilda (right outside Melbourne city. Great location, 2 blocks to the beach and restaurants. (http://basebackpackers.com/stkilda.htm)
Highly recommend. |

Try Melbourne Metro YHA at 78 Howard Street, North Melbourne 3051. Telephone 03 329 8599 email melbmetro@yhavic.org.au
Whilst not air-conditioned, it has a cooling system and if outside temp. was 38 degrees inside would be in low 20's. 24 hours reception WiFi hotspot ATM cable TV CCTV security system and electronic door locks. There is a roof top BBQ with 360 degree view of the city, free swimming pass, videos and in-hostel activities. It is a 10 min. walk to the city and close to major attractions. Public transport is right on your doorstep. This hostel has a 5 star rating. Hope this helps, have a great holiday. Have a nice day, Whistler. If you can keep a sense of humour and see the funny side of life, you will never be old. SMC. |

You can review the hostels that you stay at as well via the link that Jessie mentioned. That way you are sharing the good/bad with current and future travelers.

My personal favorite was St. Arnaud. It's not in the city center, but it's only about a 10 minute tram ride from the CBD. Small place, family run. However, they don't have AC, so that can be a pain in the arse. Also, it's definitely not a party hostel, so if you are looking for quiet and relaxing, it's the way to go.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Greenhouse Backpackers on Flinders Lane - totally central and very very great atmosphere. Free brekkie everyday, free fried brekkie one day a week and a super yummy free BBQ on another evening. The people at reception are really nice, the rooms all have (recently upgraded) air con. Just fab. Staying there now actually!
If you are looking at staying in St Kilda then I would recommend the new Cooee hostel - very new and clean. In my opinion though, the Greenhouse wins hands down. |
