I've stayed in many hostels in NZ and haven't really found any of them to be 'party hostels'. I think it really just depends on what kind of people are there at the time.

I guess the closest thing to a 'party hostel' might be Auckland Central Backpackers - because they had a big lounge area that allowed for people to hang out and was right on top of Globe Bar, which is a famous bar among backpackers in Auckland.

I liked the Waterfront Lodge & Backpackers in Napier and a few of us sat around drinking and then went out but it didn't really have a party vibe to it.

Other than that, none of the other ones seemed that way.

If you are looking for hostels all over the world, I thought that Tekweni Backpackers in Durban, South Africa was kind of a party hostel. They served beer and everyone stayed up into the wee hours of the morning drinking, swimming, and other activities.

Hope that helps a little! Big Grin

The action is fairly intense at Mary Mackillop Lodge , North Sydney, a truly miraculous accommodation venue.

I think the Base hostels in general have a bit of a party reputation, probably helped along by the bars all the ones I've stayed at have had.

I stayed in hostels all around NZ but none of them were really party hostels. the only one that might come close was Pipi Patch up in Paihia.

It was lively mind, but hardly what I'd term as "party."

Cactus Jacks in Rotorua, not quite a party hostel, but I did get wasted with many of the people there, and had a grand ol' time.

In terms of party hostels anywhere, the three best that I've stayed in:

Athens Backpackers, Greece
The Art Factory in Byron Bay, Australia
The Flying Pig Downtown in Amsterdam
