Thorn Tree Refugee |
Hidyho,
I am a 24yr old Irish male travelling to Oz for a yr after xmass 08. After a month traveling and transition period i intend on working in Sydney from then on. I am working as a Civil Engineer in Ireland but have limited experience. There seems be a broad range of jobs available and the construction industry is strong in Oz if im not mistaken but im worried i wont get any job for my line of work as my employer will consider me to be a short term employee. Any advice of any nature would be much appreciated. |

Here are some things that I know.
Australia has the lowest unemployment rates in the last 30 years. - Anyone can get a job We are going through a resourses boom and the demand for qualified people in the construction industry particularily out west is enormous Sydney is a city of five million people so there should be a place for you. The only issue that you face is that Australia has a tendancy to close down over the Christmas and New Years period. It is the festive season - with the best fireworks in the world, summer and the school holidays. You may find it difficult to find many people around to make decisions until Feburary. My recommendation would be to make approaches directly to companies before you get here. I could see that recruitment agents would be a bit affraid to suggest someone who is not even in the country yet. If you need an address in Sydney please use ours. Have a look at our web site www.greataussiebackpackers.com.au Even if you don't stay, just call us and we will check if any mail has arrived. I'm sure that you will be fine getting a job as long as you work at it. |

Thanks a mill,,,
I am planning on being in Sydney for new years wich should be fab. I wont be in any rush to start working for 3-4 wk to give myself some travelling time. Its great to get such good feedback about the construction industry as Irelands is in a downturn after a period of ten years with the Celtic Tiger roaring. I will make direct contact with some companies in Sydney today that will hopefully aquire my services. Your place looks great and ill keep it on my list of best hostels. I cant wait! Cheers. |

Hi Corky, If you plan to be in Sydney for New Year's you should book your hostel accommodation asap because they will be booked out long in advance of NYE.
A v. good hostel link. Here is the page for Sydney As you're going to be here for a year you would be better off to apply for a WHV if you haven't already done so. You will find lots of info on that link. I'd advise you to choose where you will be staying carefully and avoid Kings Cross - commonly referred to as "the Cross". it's a well known red light district. It is true that certain industries tend to close down over the Christmas/New Year period, but you could always look for work in other areas - particularly in the hospitality industry. Have a good trip and enjoy our country. Cheers. |
