Owing to the popularity of the 'favorite places in the UK' thread over at the UK & Ireland forum, I thought we should have something similar on each regional forum.

So... what are your favorite places in New Zealand, and why?

Russell - Old world charm, small, uncrowded, and sitting under the trees outside the cafes across the road from The Strand just watching the waters.

Rotorua - Maori culture, Tiki Tiri, Kuirau Park and geothermal activity, Government Gardens.

Franz Josef - glaciers, glacier hikes, surroundings. The Maori legend of Hinehukatere. The rainforest was right outside the backdoor.

Milford Sound - Overnight cruise on the Milford Wanderer after all the tourists and day-trippers leave it gets very quiet and a silence descends and you traverse the Sound to the Tasman Sea and the sheer rise of the peak and the mountains and the silence is awesome and there's something magical and holy about the place and it's just so inspiring.

Queenstown Lake Wakapitu and the Remarkables and the surrounding mountains, I liked the whole atmosphere, sitting on the balcony facing the mountains.

Lake Tekapo The lake is so blue and it was just out the back door of the YHA. Beautiful scenery, not many people, relaxing, good walks. Wildflowers, only a few shops.

Wanaka - Perfect little town in the mountains.

Wellington - Possibly the perfect city.

Milford Sound - Stunning, untouched scenery. Utterly dramatic and surprising at every turn.

hello everyone,
Wow, thank you for the great information. I hope to be going to "down under" land next year, these tips will really help. I was looking at staying on Norfolk Island for part of the time-----has anyone spent time there? This is the place I would like to try: norfold island accommodation It looks like a great family getaway, and a great beach too. I see that it is close to New Zealand and that will work out well for us. Thanks.
