My friend and I have been in NZ for 8 months on a working holiday, and have finally saved up enough money for a ticket home via South East Asia! Before Thailand, we're stopping in Australia (in and out of Sydney) for 18 days just to check it out, but really aren't wanting to spend much of our hard earned dough there when Asia will be so much cheaper.

Any reccommendations for cheap accommodation, sightseeing, buses, etc. would be appreciated. We leave in three weeks, so there isn't much time to plan. We don't want to stay in Sydney for the whole time because we know it's expensive, but we do arrive and leave from there.

Thanks dolls.

Hi CaseyA, tight budget means hostels. This is a good hostel site.
How tight is your budget and what are your interests? Sydney ferries are the cheapest way to cruise on the harbour and the Manly ferry is the best one. When will you be arriving in Sydney? It is winter at present (June - August).

Blue Mountains are worth seeing, great YHA hostel there too, but it will be cold at night. July is the coldest month and winter temps in Sidders range from 8ºC - 16ºC, but there are always exceptions.

Plenty of things to see along Darling Harbour.
Interested in wineries? Hunter Valley is the wine area and plenty of winery tours available. If you can stretch it, do a Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, it's awesome and the views are spectacular.

Cheers. Thumbs Up

Tight budget? That *is* an adventure. Yeah, I mean, we're all on tight budgets when traveling, how do you define "tight"?

Australia is an expensive place to travel, and Sydney is a very expensive city.

If you're into camping/*sort of roughing it*, and want to see some of the country, check out Wicked Camper Vans... http://www.wickedcampers.com.au. Cheap and fun.

Unfortunately the increasing price of petrol is a bummer, but renting the van = transportation + accomodation, plus the freedom to do what you want, and go where you want, when you want. If it's your scene/style. It's a heck of a lot of fun!!!

how tight is tight? Australia will cost you a bare bones budget (ie no drinking, no tours) of like 40-50 dollars a day. You can couchsurf or camp and that will bring down your budget. So can cooking.

But the second you go out or do any tours, your budget is blown!!!!!
