Hi, my friend and I are planning a trip to the Whitsundays from end of aug early sept. We're doing a quick trip from sydney for about 5 days (including flying). I had a few questions:

1. Can anyone recommend cheap but comfy places to stay?

2. we're meant to take Virgin Blue that lands in Proserpine. I know nothing on the locations in the Whitsundays, where should we base ourselves from and how long should it take to get from the airport to wherever that is?

3. Any recommended itineraries? We have three full days and one half day.

4. How much should I budget for the trip?

Thank you very much!

Hi Wandergurl, will you be spending all your nights in the Whitsundays?

I don't know when your plane lands in Proserpine - hopefully in the middle of the day. You need to get transportation to Airlie Beach, the launching point for all things Whitsunday.

For that time of year I recommend reserving your accommodation prior to arrival. I don't know your budget or tastes, so you're on your own there.

It's easy enough to book excursions once you there, but, because of the season, I recommend booking ahead, or at least having a plan, or a narrowed-down list of things you might like to do.

The Whitsunday's are all about the islands and reefs, and while Airlie Beach is a fun, compact, friendly little party town, it's where you come back to at night to have a beer and relate your day's adventures.

Hail and Heed the voice of reason!! Spiralout spaketh sooth!
Book ahead, find out about transport options from Prossie to Airlie Beach (min 1 hour trip by car - not sure about bus availability).
Decide whether you want to do an overnight trip on a boat or if you plan to overnight on one of the Islands or just do everything day by day out of Airlie.
You must see Whitsunday beach (I will get there oneday Roll Eyes).

Wandergirl, Greyhound buslines run buses Proserpine to Airlie BEach. I tried to C+P but it didn't come out properly. So

Thanks for your tips everyone!

We are looking at a small BnB on Airlie that has airport pickups, which should be great.

Looking forward to everyone's suggestions on which islands to see, etc. Smile

Hmmm.... I think you meant Whitehaven Beach, Mim, and yes, I concur - one of the top ten beaches in the world. Smile

You really should do a 2-3 day sailing trip where you get to sleep on the boat. They range in price from backpacker budget to 5 star luxury (can you say personal chef?). Just make sure you're clear what you're looking for because there are some real party boats (which is great, if that's what you're into but not so great if you're not Abzv)

Carpe diem!
