I am planning to travel around SEA for 3 weeks this summer and the Thai beaches are certainly on our agenda. However, I have 2 questions:

1. How do I secure my valuables when at the beach? How do I keep my backpack and money belt from being taken?

2. What risk of disease is there by transmission in water from the recent outbreaks in Burma.

Thanks y'all!

I would leave most of your valuables in your hotel room either in a safety deposit box or somewhere hidden in your room. There is no need to bring your passport to the beach in my opinion and you don't want or need to have tons of cash on you. Bring along a day pack with a few essentials for when you're on the water and don't put anything in it that you can't afford to have stolen. ie: beach towels, sunscreen, small amount of cash etc.

Thailand has a huge coast line. Given what the ocean can gather up the chances of you getting a disease because of the cyclone are pretty remote. Usually the concern would be local..not miles away in Thailand.

To be on the safe side ask the locals once you get there.

The other side of Thailand..Ko Sumui, Ko Chang are way away from the cyclone hit area.

At many places there are people who are going to rent you a chair and an umbrella for perhaps B100 per day. I usually just take a regular small daypack and ask the guys who take care of that area to keep an eye on my things. Then I tie my pack to my chair (just to avoid fast running rip offs) and keep a bit of an eye on it while in the water.

Generally speaking, they guys who have the concession in that area will keep a good eye on your things as they are hoping you will come back tomorrow and give them another B100.

Fact is, your stuff is probably safer than in most major Western cities.
