Ok guys here's the deal, I'm tavelling around Thailand independently, then I'm going to Vietnam and I have booked myself on a tour to give myself a break! However, I do have the option of five days in Hanoi (hanoi will be my hub for the extra 5 days but wont be spending time in hanoi itself) before my tour starts to explore any areas of interest near Hanoi by myself (I do not need any extra time in Hanoi itself because the tour covers Hanoi). So my first question is what is there to do outside of Hanoi that is doable in 4/5 days? Are there any places to go on day trips that are worth while? And now on to my dilemma, I do not know whether to take the extra 5 days to do this or use these 5 days in Thailand to extend my time there from 3 and half weeks to four weeks? What do you guys think? cheers !

You could easily do a Halong Bay tour in that time. Or, you could just hang in the old town part and chill a bit. Eating, drinking, people watching and afternoon naps are a great way to spend one's time.
