Question:
I'm going to be in Nepal next March as part of a longr RTW trip, and have not have much experience of trekking but it sounds great. I'm travelling alone, and so am wondering how easy it is to meet people to go trekking with in either Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Thanks for your advice,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

You should be able to find some fellow trekkers fairly easily from either Kathmandu or Pokhara either in guest houses, internet cafes, restaurants or other popular trekker hang outs. I wouldn't worry about it. There should be people around even if it's not peak trekking season.

Also, since it sounds like you'll be in the Pokhara region, there are some great "tea house treks" in the area that have beautiful gorge and mountain trails AND guest/tea houses where you can eat and spend the night along the way. Because these trails go through small villages, you pass people all the time and could probably trek it alone if you're careful. There also nice because you don't have to haul any gear or food with you.

There are some wonderful trails that go past natural hot springs (the town is called Tatopani) in the Pokhara region. It may be a little over-trekked at this point, but nothing beats a hot soak in a natural spring next to a river after hiking all day!

Have a fabulous time on your RTW trip!

I hiked the Annapurna Circuit alone and met a whole array of freindly travellers. I even ended up sharing a roon with two of them at times.

I think one thing that is important is to respect other people's space though. I remember bumping into threee guys from London who were more than happy to hike and chat, share a room and knock some down beers at night. I also remember meeting an older Canadian couple who, while very freindly obviously wanted their privacy. You have to feel out in each situation and not just assume because someone is friendly they want to hold your hand for the next 2 monthes ( some people don't realise this, I've people who've said they we're looking to 'follow someone'.....let me tell you, I'm not the guy. ) Anyway, I was lucky enough to share part of my trek with great people and still keep in touch with one person.

The hot springs at Tatopani are great for an evening soak and there is a bakery too!

Goodl luck

Nic
