This is a good starting point for you.

Asiaxpat

The further you get from Hong Kong Island the cheaper your accommodation will run. (ie: the New Territories)

You can find affordable stuff (depending on your income obviously) in Kowloon and Causeway Bay but you have to look hard.

Talk to your school they will be able to give you advice. Even if you just get something temporay as when you get there your fellow students will know all the tricks I would assume.

Advice from ou contact in HK said the accommodation is very expensive and she recommended Hong Kong hostel in Causeway Bay and we have booked for 5 nights the cost is around 300 HK dollar. If you are without much funds and are on a very low budget you could try registering on Hospitality Club a worldwide website which offers free accommodation. Check the site out and contact the members after reading their profiles. We stayed for 3 nights with a Chinese family in Foshan and had the greatest time ever we've stayed with families all over the world, I can recommend this.
Best of Luck

I can second Hong Kong Hostel in Causeway Bay, stayed there last Autumn - really nice accommodation! It really depends on what you are doing in Hong Kong. You can save money by living away from Hong Kong Island but this could mean travelling back to Kowloon/Hong Kong Island everyday from New Territories which is quite a distance.

I travel a lot; I hate having my life disrupted by routine.
