I've trawled the threads......everyone raves about Suk11 but it's too pricey for us ten! Big John's is cheap, but has some pretty negative reviews - even though we could barter with Marmite!
Can anyone recommend a CHEAP bed? Don't reall ymind *where* it is.

you could always barter up and down khaosan. i think places that would be THAT cheap most likely wouldn't have a website, or maybe even an entry in some guidebooks.

How much do you want to spend per night?
In the Khao San Road area you might be able to find something cheaper - but how much do you want to spend per person?
http://www.khaosanroad.com/

You could also try Pattaya. I don't recall too many places with dorms but I do pass by cheap places with fan cooling only that are around 200 baht.

During the summer "low season" period you can find places with air and hot water starting around 400 baht.

Transportation, "all you can eat buffets," hotels in general, bars are cheaper in Pattaya. Bus ride from Ekamai bus station is less than 120 baht per pax.

Like the other post said, cheap places usually don't have web pages.

Pattaya is cheaper than Bankok! If your group has lots of little kids in it there are movie theaters and a Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum there. Other kid related stuff.

Many hotels do not want lots of people in one room - too much damage from kids and you use more towels, soap, etc. Bigger mess to clean up.

Spend a little more now and pay it back later.

Good luck.

We've found this place: Sukhumvit On Nut Guesthouse http://www.bangkok-guesthouse.com/
and they'll only charge 1424TBH for all ten of us. It seems a bit out of the way, but that's only if you think KSR is the middle of the world!
Anyone stayed there?

On nut is far away. Its the end of the sky train and its a long commute and their's nothing around it. The sky train closes at 12 so after that you're in for a pain in the ass cab ride home. But looking at your website, it appears you are traveling with kids so I doubt you'll have late nights.

In that case, this might be your best option. I wouldn't stay with little kids on Khao San anyways.

You're right- we won't have relaly late nights. But we decided it was too far away anyway. We want to be near cheap eats Wink and be able to wander around something other than a residential neighbourhood.
The Train Inn looks OK - and we're arriving by train so wouldn't have to walk too far with our packs and potentially tired children.

Although I read you like to prepare your own, a good place to find cheap eats is at one of the many food courts. You can find them in most shopping centers. There is usually one (cheap) in most supermarkets also.

At these "local" food courts, each can find dishes to individual liking, starting around 25~30 baht. You should be able to feed the 10 of you for $15 ~ $20 NZ.

Around Bangkok, buses would probably be your most economical means of transportation. "Thaiways" offers some online maps with buse routes. They can also be found, in paper form, around Bangkok. The tourist kiosk, in front of MBK, is one place to look for them. There is also a lot of other free tourist info at these kiosks.

We stayed on Phra Arthit. I can't think of the name of the hotel (I'll try to find the business card), but there were a few on the street that were clean and quiet. Also a lot of nice restaurants and not far from Khao San Rd.
