Holds PhD in Packing |
Someone has just told me that I won't be able to get hold of Indian currency in the UK & will have to just get it in India.
Is this true? |

If you are flying into India then don't worry plenty of exchange bureaus in the airport.
If crossing by land you will find many ATM's in the cities. Try asking Asian Indian friends in London...am sure you will find some left overs that people might have from their visits. No need to fret.
There are ATM's in the airport that accept Visa and Mastercared, and they issue Rupees. If you could go to Cooks and get Indian currency, you'd pay a significant penalty for the privilege. |

Use atms to make withdrawls within India. Exchange rates for atms are much better than Amex TC. One disconcerting aspect is that the 2 or 3 atms I went to in India, all had armed guards, who would only allow one person in at a time. But you soon get used to it.

Going to resurrect this one....
Anyone in the UK (and possibly elsewhere) its worth ringing round to find out about rupees - I got some from my local AMEX branch. Officially they don't have them, but they are sometimes avaliable. Can be useful to have a bit of local currency when you land. |

You should not carry a lot of currency in hand. Atleast not show it off.
Avoid going to touts. Try to get into banks for your currency issues. |
