On July 25, I'm leaving for a 3+ month trip to:

*Thailand
*Laos
*Vietnam
*Cambodia
*Malaysia
*Indonesia

My question is this:

What countries are going to require me to have documentation in addition to my Passport (i.e. a Visa)? I've heard that Laos and Vietnam will. I tried to call the Laos Embassy here in the US, and to order one, they wanted me to send my original Passport in the mail to them, in addition to the 2 photos, $50, etc. When I asked if I could send a copy of my Passport, they hung up on me. I think I'd be nuts to put my actual Passport in the mail

What other options would y'all suggest for those countries that will require Visas?

Don't do it now. And your Port Of Entry will most likely be Bangkok which will cheerfully stamp your passport when you enter. Get the rest of the visas in Bangkok, except for the Cambodia one that you get at the border for $20.

Personally, I prefer to get my Vietnam visa in Phnom Penh, since it is on the way (and cheaper there).

Now would be an excellent time to procure a buttload of extra passport photos that you will need when getting the visas.

I don't know anything about Indonesia or Malaysia.

Do all of them at the border. Thailand is free for 30 days. Loas is 25 bucks. Cambodia 20 on the vietnam side and 30-35 on the Thai side, depending on border bribes that day.

Vietnam needs to be done ahead of time.
