Hi friends,

I will be arriving Hong Kong on 7th June in the morning On the same day i am planning to catch a train to Shanghai. My question is can i get the ticket on the same day or do i need to book the train ticket in advance. Is there any website where i can book the tickets online.

Is it a good idea going by train from Hong Kong to Shanghai.

I did the reverse journey a couple of years ago in january and booked mine the day before. I would suggest doing that if you are going in any holidays.
The trip it self wasn't a classic and took 26 hours but it is good value as it cost about £30 if i recall. This was a couple of years ago though.

Try to book it in advance. you can get more info here:

make sure you have a valid chinese visa, try to get the top sleeper if going on the hard sleeper (which is quite soft). Train ride is 20 hrs 3pm-11am. I did this trip last month, bring food with you cuz what they serve isn't the best.

You cannot book the Shanghai train online. There are agents who can book it for you though.

If you are after saving money, catch the ferry from HKIA to Shenzhen airport and fly from there. You can book flights using elong.net

We are doing the reverse on the 29th May. The train we are taking is a soft sleeper train taking 20 hours at a cost of 669 Yuan a cost of about 47 pounds. You can also take the hard sleeper which is cheaper. We bought our tickets directly from Shanghai station. I understand that tickets cannot be issued before 7 days before travel but they can be booked in advance. I would very much suggest that you do book in advance, we tried to buy tickets for another journey three days in advance and found the train completely full. We have also travelled on the sleeper coaches which are similar to the ones being used in Vietnam a good alternative if you are unable to get the train tickets, best of luck.

An airfare from Shenzhen to Shanghai on that day is currently RMB600 so the train isnt much cheaper as you can get from HK to Shenzhen airport for around RMB100.
