Hi, can any body suggest or has anybody had any experiance with renting motorcycles in thailand?

I am an experianced motorcyclist and wanted to rent a bike for a month, 250cc bajas look ok, but the places ive looked at seem to offer no or little insurance.

Can anybody suggest a good company? does one exsist that offers decent insurance cover?(and decent well maintained bikes)

I will be starting off in Bangkok then getting out of there pretty quickly

Thanks
Jay

Jay you would be crasy to ride a bike through Bankok, get to your destination by public transport ,then rent a bike . There are heaps of rentals with or without insurence, any where you go. Paranoid Dance

I rented one in Chiang Mai...best way to get to Doi Suthep. The hotel had a deal with a rental place called Mr. Beer. Don't let the name fool you, it worked out OK. If I remember correctly, even with insurance, you weren't covered after dark. They also lied about how much gas to buy--I filled the tank and only used about a quarter of it.

Wrote a short article about it.

Personally, I believe one has to be crazy to drive a car in Bangkok. Every time I get behind the wheel, I wind up wanting to kill someone! Mad

A bike in Bangkok is more safe than in most cities in the West. People expect bikes in the mix, and often even yield to motorcycles. With the exception of lame tourists, most will look before opening car doors, or stepping out of a bus.

Although it would appear to the contrary, upcountry is a little less safe. Buses executing a pass on blind curve is a given. Many people pay less attention to traffic. And, at night, many drive without lights. I would mention drunk drivers, but I wish not to offend my northern friends. Wink

As with most "safety" concerns in Thailand, vehicle insurance is a legally required technicality. I don't know of anyone who has used their "insurance" to get repairs. Most damage repair is negotiated on the spot.

The most important thing you can do is get good travelrs insurance. Besides medical care, they might have a property floater that could be added.

Be aware of the well known con trick to motorcylces, letting you rent it, then stealing it from you later.
