we're planning a trip to nepal, tibet and india. we want to travel from kathmandu to Lhasa by plane and come back over land (friendship highway). Is thera way to book a plane ticket from Europe (Belgium)? Is it a problem to book it in Kathmandu? Can we book ik without having to join a group? Any advice on fares, reliable travel agents, visa restrictions etc?
Travelling in Tibet, is it a problem to come by drinkable water? Is it wise to bring a water filter or is bottled water available? What about the dogs in Tibet? A lot of guidebooks warn for loose dogs and the risk for Rabies? Is this a real risk or somewhat exagerated? Thanks for your advice. |

I was with a large group when I was in Tibet, so I'm not sure about fares/visas/bookings, etc, but I may be able to offer some other advice.
I would advise you to bring a water filter and/or some iodine tablets. Bottled water can be hard to come by outside of the cities. Rabid dogs are a problem all over Asia. Just don't pet the dogs and don't walk at night in secluded areas where there may be dog packs. Monasteries often have LARGE dogs, sometimes several, chained outside, as protection for any relics that haven't already been pilfered or stolen. They are frightening to walk past, but are usually tied securely. There are lots of advertisements for trips to Tibet in the travel agencies located in the tourist district of Kathmandu. I would stay away from these (unless you have a name of a reputable one). Patronize a travel agency near government offices and higher-end businesses. I've heard that it can be difficult to get a visa if you are not traveling with a group. You may be able to arrange to be a part of a group visa and then split from the group when you're in Tibet. The problem is that the Chinese government wants to keep an eye on you and wants you to spend a lot of money. There are military checkpoints you'll have to stop at if you are driving long distances and where you'll have your visas checked. It's been a couple of years since I was there, but I remember meeting travelers who were not with a group and were staying off the beaten track, so it is do able. How long are you planning on being in Tibet for? |
