I'm an American college student who'll be losing his overseas-travel virginity in Thailand this summer. I'm planning on staying at the Suk11 when I get into Bangkok, but I'm curious how many nights people recommend I should stay before moving on.

I'm thinking 3. My flight gets in at night, so there's the first night. Then two full days to explore the city, and I'll take off North the next day.

I'm travelling solo and will be in the country for about a month, if that makes any difference. I don't have any firm plans, but I think I'll spend most of my time in the North.

Thoughts?

Three nights is about right. Others will be along shortly to recommend more.

I was expecting to hate Bangkok, but I actually quite liked it and could have stayed a few extra days.

We've just arrived in Samui from Bangkok where we stayed three nights at Suk 11 (4 days as we arrived early morning from Chiang Mai and left late at night on a flight to Samui).

I guess it depends on how much time you have to spare - if you're not on a tight schedule and aren't coming back to Bangkok I would recommend thinking about a few more days.

I think staying in Suk 11 definitely made it more bearable for us. We took a trip to Kao San road, just to take a look, and were glad we weren't staying there.

Suk 11 is a decent place to get over your jet lag too. However, I would recommend you take 30mins to explore as we kept on coming across little areas we hadn't realised were there (eventually found 4 communal areas with fridges and microwaves, the roof garden (complete with outside shower), the laundry room, the travel shop (in Sependipity cafe) and the TV room with a whole range of dvds and tvs to watch for free if you want the distraction).

I can also recommend the guy who sells kebabs right on the corner by the 7-11 (if you're not veggie). 10 baht each and tasty as hell. Though be careful of the green chilli between the pineapple and the meat. Hot as hell.

Chiang Mai was fantastic. Much more laid back than Bangkok.

how many nights in bangkok?

i'd have to guess one because..

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me

...sorry, couldn't resist.

You're just trying to get your post count up to hit your target... Wink

Good luck with that.

LOL, when I first read this I thought you said you were losing your virginity in Thailand.

Anyway, 3 nights sounds good, but honestly I would personally stay a week. There's quite a bit to see and do, plenty of sites, but do your best to stay out of road traffic (ridiculously) slow. Walk and make full use of the cheap river boats (which are an attraction in and of themselves)

It sounds like you're schedule is flexible, so I'd make room to extend your time in BKK in the event that you enjoy it enough. Good luck and safe travels.
