Hey there,

Has anyone purchased an rtw ticket and not used the return flight back? Are there penalties if I do this?

I'm trying to go one way Toronto to Australia and the flights are costing me a fortunate! especially compared to a rtw ticket. 9K is the lowest so far.

I'm going Toronto - London - Toyko - Seoul - Singapore - Melbourne - Hobart

The other option I was considering is just booking Toronto to Toyko part and booking the rest as I go.
I have heard that flights in and around Asia are cheap.
Will this work out cheaper for me then buying it all in Canada?

I would enjoy the freedom of it. But then would I have a problem entering the countries with no proof of plans to exit the country?

Thanks in advance,

I have no experience with buying tickets in Asia on the fly, but in general, round-trip tickets or some sort of 'circle' fare where you eventually are booked back to the place you started from, are almost always a lot less expensive (especially long haul), as only round- or circle trip itineraries qualify for 'excursion' = discounted fares, where one-way fares are never discounted. You can book a round- or circle trip fare and not use the return, but if you have one segment in your itinerary that you don't fly, the rest of your reservation is also cancelled. Therefore, be careful that you are only a no show for the last segment(s) of your ticket.

As I said, I'm no Asia expert, but you may want to check if an air pass is avaiable for some of the regions you travel in. Sometimes those are a good deal, but often require a minmum of 4 or so segments; others have to be purchased in conjunction with an international ticket.

So you've done it? And they don't penalize you for it?
I mean they have my info/visa etc so I wasn't sure.

I tried to get an Asia pass but the travel agent said I didn't qualify for that because similar to the rtw, I'm not starting and ending in Asia.

Thanks for the additional info though!

Hello Hello,

I did a 4 month trip last year: Korea, China, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Thailand.

I booked a one way ticket last year to Seoul, had no problem entering the country on a one way. I booked my remaining flights while in Asia, i found it to be a lot cheaper, there is a lot of competition amongst travel agents, and there is some good deals to be had, just have to look for them!

Safe Travels Cool
