A friend and I are heading to India for two weeks at the end of Sept. Starting in Delhi, we're doing the whole Golden Triangle bit in the first week, then heading up to the Himalayan foothills near Almora for a week visiting friends.

I've got some good ideas for places to stay in Agra and Jaipur, but I'm struggling a bit with Delhi. I've had a search on this forum and a good trawl over the intarwebs, and have found either fairly old information and/or wildly conflicting reviews. I'm after something a bit more comfortable than I had last time I was in Delhi (basic backpackery place in Pahar Ganj - fine on my own but this time I have company) but not ridiculously expensive. We're on holiday rather than travelling on a tight budget, if you know what I mean. Neither of us need luxury, but we don't want to make hard work of it either. Our own bathroom would be good - hot water better yet. Clean and not too noisy (for Delhi) ideal. Is Karol Bagh a better bet than PG, for example?

Does anyone have any recommendations from recent experience? I need a place for a couple of days either side of the Agra/Jaipur trip, and a day at the end before flying home. Budget relatively flexible, but say for argument's sake £30-£50 between us for the room per night. Even in Delhi that ought to get us something reasonable, no?

Thanks in advance,

ralph

We stayed at the Yatri Guesthouse in Mar '07 and found it to be just fine. Very quiet. You'll find lots of traveler's reviews all over the web, most but not all good. Good Luck.

I was in dehli three times this year and each time I stayed in majnu ka tilla. The rooms were big, clean, with bathrooms and tv. Its very quiet there though a little removed from the city centre your just 20 mins from connaught place in a rickshaw. It cost about 5 pounds sterling a night, absolute bargain. Gangchen house is where I stayed, though there are a few places there.

Thanks both, much appreciated. Yatri's looking a good possibility.

You might also want to check out Ahuja Guesthouse. When I stayed there, it was $60 USD per night so should easily fall within your budget. Really nice rooms, good breakfast, in a beautiful park-like setting in the midst of Delhi. It was very close to India Gate, the government buildings, and other attractions. We liked it a lot.
