Hi everyone!

I'm currently looking for a new external hard drive, as well as perhaps an MP3 player and/or mobile phone.

In the next few weeks I'll be passing through both Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Any idea where I'll be likely to find the best deals?

Thanks!

Hi

It has been a while since I went to both KL and Singapore on the same trip so I can't really tell you where it is good to go. But Malaysia seems to be pretty cheap these days. A couple of weeks back I went to KL and Bangkok and my impression was that KL was cheaper. Here is my KL trip report from a couple of years back http://gardkarlsen.com/malaysia_kuala_lumpur.htm . Maybe you can find some useful info there :-)

Regards
Gard

Thanks for the tip! --- sometimes I guess I'm just paranoid that it won't work on my system or something.

Singapore has a huge indoor market full of electronics. I'm not exactly sure where it is...I do know it was right near the hostel I stayed at. It's a big buildign with lots of floors selling all kinds of things. Malaysia tends to be cheaper but I guess it all depends on what you are willing to pay and what the quality is.

Before you go, check your canada prices carefully as a benchmark. The main advantage to shopping in these places is they have less customs duties than many countries. In the USA, for example, I'd be willing to wager you wouldn't find so many deals you can't get at the discounters in NYC or on the internet.

Find out what you want, and get price lists, including sale prices, so when you get there, you aren't dazzled by the fact you're buying a product in a foriegn country, and forgetting you're not saving a cent.

Also, check your warrantees CAREFULLY, and the products. Sometimes products are sold with limited warrantees with difficult repair or replacement procedures, IF there is an international warrantee at all.
