Hi all,

I'm heading off with my boyfriend in 4 weeks and we reckon we'll have €8000 between us. We're flying in to Bangkok, the overland through Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thai Islands, Malaysia and Singapore then flying to oz (working and travelling). Does anyone know form experience whether it is realistic to see so much of Asia on that budget, we'll need to enter oz with a few thousand for initial set up costs - maybe €4000 or so!

That €8000 is just spending money 9 flights, insurance etc are already paid for.

I'd appreciate any advice, I’m a bit panicked! Trinque

Thanks a mill

So if you are working on 4000 brit quid is it for asia?, sounds pretty good.

There have been some posts/discussions at times and in the link four posts down on that thread you will find a good range of information.

Though some people might spend a bit more and Singapore can be more expensive (go without a beer while you are there), you will not be there too long and thus US$700/month would seem a reasonable average and even if you up that about 10%to round off on current exchange rate for about 400 quid by two, that's 800 quid per month so 4000 could have you going for up to five months.

Have a look at www.talesofasia.com for some reasonable background and other relevant threads and you should pick up some good tips on all sort of things for helping with expenditure and just remember that there will be plenty about only too happy to have you paying more than you need to.

In case you need to do any additional flights in asia, there are a lot of budget airlines you can check out on www.asia-budget-airlines.com

15 euro per person should be enough, as a rough guide, for per day costs per person in Southeast Asia (more in Singapore and probably Malaysia and maybe Vietnam, but less in the other countries). So with about 2000 euro each (given that you want to have 4000 when you arrive in Oz), you could travel for about 4 months (perhaps more if you really try to cut costs).

Is that about the length of time you had in mind?

well we were hoping about 3 months so with your estimation we should be fine!
Everyone around me seems to have a different opinion - most of the people i know who have travelled that direction have heading straight for the thai islands and got wasted for as long as possible so prehaps they are not the best people to heed advice from.
Thanks for taking the time to post!

E15/US$20/d or US$600/m is probably towards the lower end of the scale for some and it will be easy enough to spend more depending on what levels of accomodation you are after and obviously how/where you eat/drink.
Given the exchange rate between Euro/US$ and Brit pound, you have a good margin for doing it easy for three months if you are sensible about it.
