Hello I'm planning to go to Ko Phangan, Thailand in November for 6 months. Some of you might say 6 MONTHS in 1 place! WHY? Well it's simple, i've already traveled around Thailand and the world. I just want to get away and relax in 1 spot for 6 months. I feel like I've been on the go for the last 10 years and staying in 1 spot for 6 months without having to work sounds perfect to me. The last time i was in Thailand I would stay in a spot for a few weeks and then move on to another spot. Not this time, baby!

So I've never stayed in one spot for a long period of time so I have no idea how much a long term rental would cost. How much per month to get a cheap no frill beach bungalow. I don't need T.v and all that shit. That's why I'm going there. After all we have great beaches where I live now in Hawaii. I'm going for more of a lifestyle change.

Any comments or ideas are wanted. You can even call me an wanker and tell me to go screw myself.

If you go from somewhere with a great beach to somewhere with a great beach how is that a lifestyle change?

Because you don't have to work? Six months is a long time - how will you fill it?

We're in Phuket at the minute, having two months doing nothing before we go home. But I'm a writer and I fill my days with that. There are places advertised here from B300 upwards. We're paying B500 for a pretty large bungalow, nice kitchen, aircon, TV and Wifi.

If you're not bothered about having a beach it would be cheaper to live up in Chiang Mai for 6 months instead, you could do a course of some kind up there too.

I'm also wondering how you will fill your days. Are you a writer? I love the beach, I really do, but I know I would go stir crazy on that island for 6 months. I like the advice about going to Chiang Mai and doing a course. I would go to Bangkok, myself, because that is one of my favorite cities in the world. I would teach English part time. By the way, are you sure you can stay in Thailand for 6 months?

What's that James, did you mention a lifestyle change?

I couldn't hear you - oh, thankfully you said it twice - you kind person you.

My points still stand - what will you do all day? Will you be ok sat on a beach all day long (and what will you do when it rains, other than get wet of course?)

And what about a visa, the best you can get is a year one, but you still have to leave once every three months.

I've just noticed in your first post that I can call you a wanker - wanker - but only for shouting and not answering any of my points that's all Smile

Remember, not everyone needs to "fill" their days. Many are quite happy doing pretty much nothing, even for 6 months...

Im not concerned about the visa. I dont mind a quick trip out of the country, I welcome it.

I plan spending my days meeting fellow travelers, conversing with locals, reading, and such. How do you spend your time? Watching Entertainment Tonight after hitting up the mall?

I managed to live on the same beach for a sum total of 2 weeks before I ran off back to Calcutta.
I think the sound of waves crashing 24 hours a day sent me abit crackers. Never have I been so happy to be up to my knees in Slum river and being harrassed by lepurs.

I personally believe I would go crazy doing that for 6 months but that doesn't mean you will to. I say go for it. What is the worst that could happen... after 2 months you get bored and you move somewhere else for the rest of the time.

I have to imagine that 6 months of not working is the point.

Personally I love the idea and think you have made almost the perfect decision on where and why. I personally would have chose Koh Tao but I am not the one doing it this time. There is something about those Gulf Islands especially the small two that is either magic to some people or not.

Enjoy yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure what visa, if any, you used to enter Thailand.
If you were visa exempt, then you have only two "30 day without visa" entries left within the next 6 months.

The days of endless 30 day turnarounds are over.

Good choice , Koh Phangan , love it. It's Probably a better option than Tao , as it's a bit larger. Still , not lots to do, so be prepared to lots of chillin. we will be doing a 3 month stay next year , checked out a few long term rentals on our last trip (just got back 2 days ago), didn't see anything we wanted , but we'll keep looking. Rental prices were cheap though.

good luck and go for it !!

James you seem to know your stuff about thailand but are you aware about their new visa rules? You can only get 3, 30 day visas I think within a year and then have to wait 6 months or something to come back...you wouldn't be able to get 6 months in without a different kind of visa besides straight tourist visa...

India, UAE, Africa next, follow me! I'm 24, why isn't 100 countries and 7 continents realistic in a lifetime...33 and 4 down...39 or 40 and 5 by end of year

Im jealous. ANy one of the places there will give you long term accomadtions..just work out a deal. They will probably make you pay per month.

After 6 months though, i'd be sick of drinking lol.... which beach will u be staying on?

I say get Dive Certified and enjoy some cool places. Maybe even hook up with Phan Ngan Divers and work a boat once in a while when they have a big crowd. They'll call you when they need you. If you're alrwady certified, then grab some gear and do some diving, the marine part is great.

Maybe do some fishing and buy a moped to get around on. I'd also look at taking a class on Thai Massages, I knew an Aussi there who did that and he was able to go home and teach Thai massages locally.

I dunno, hanging out with a Singha and a fishing pole sounds good to me, 6 months is quite a while but I could deffiniately fill the time doing what I like. Be a simple guy with simple needs and enjoy, most people don't have the "dilemma" of how they will spend their 6 months in Thailand.
