Out of curiosity, could anybody who's been to Kyrgyzstan tell me whether internet cafes are common and what the connection is like? Thanks a bunch.

Ahm, you'll find them in Bishkek and Osh for sure. In Bishkek they are sprawling and you'll have no problem finding one that suits you. It's not always reliable...you'll have to shop around and sometimes just quit and go back later. Osh has a couple...enough for checking email. Smaller towns don't have (or at least rarely do) internet cafes at all.
All in all, you'll get by. I even uploaded some pictures to my website from Bishkek. Took a bit of patience though.
